UK — a tale of two extremes

October 22, 2009 Leave a comment

Fly on the wall

Zafar Khalid Farooq

Whilst here in Pakistan, as the army wages war against militants in its backyard, the British establishment is rolling out the red carpet for extremist and xenophobes of its own kind. Tonight, on BBC television, the British National Party (BNP) leader, Nick Griffin, will take his place alongside members of the UK political establishment, including Justice Secretary and former Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, as a guest on the most revered political platform in British television – BBC 1′s ‘Question Time’.

For those unfamiliar with this breed of repugnant racists, the BNP are a far right-wing fringe party who, until recently, had thankfully always remained on the periphery of British politics. The BNP, with policies that advocate voluntary resettlement to those ‘immigrants’ (that is, non-whites) who are legally in the UK, and who, only this month agreed to change its constitution to allow non-white members for fear of legal proceedings, have rarely attracted much popular support in the past. At the last general election, in 2005, they managed to win a paltry 0.7 per cent of the electoral vote.

So why the sudden high-profile invitation from the BBC’s flagship political programme? Because since 2005, the party’s electoral fortunes have improved. Earlier this year they won six per cent in the European elections, resulting in two seats for the party in the European Parliament, including one for Griffin. BBC editorial guidelines state that “significant minor parties should also receive some network coverage” and under the terms of its charter, the BBC is also legally obligated to ensure ‘due impartiality’. Hence, the presence of Mr Griffin under the studio arc lights tonight.

But what has prompted this upswing in popularity of this most odious of political parties? The economic downturn has certainly played a part. The last time far right politics enjoyed anything close to popular appeal was during the economically stagnating 70s. Then, it was the BNP’s predecessor, the National Front, who enjoyed some electoral support whilst the country succumbed to a three-day week and industrial unrest. It took the Thatcher government’s tough line on immigration and the economic boom of the mid-80s to crush the extreme right’s electoral ambitions.

Another reason for the BNP’s success this year may have been due to voter disaffection with the mainstream political parties. The expenses scandal, which saw British politicians from across the political spectrum fraudulently claiming expenses for personal gain, blew up weeks before the European election in June. Voter anger at the corruption of MPs, compounded by the fact that the country was in the midst of a recession, drew voters to the political fringes.

However, another explanation for their renewed popularity — and one that few mainstream politicians are reluctant to admit or even acknowledge in the UK for fear of being deemed insensitive to ethnic minorities, especially the Muslim community — is the rise of militant Islamism in the UK.

Ironically, radical Islamism, of which there are a number of groups, and the BNP share a similar political wardrobe. Both are avowedly anti-Semitic (although the BNP stance towards Jews has softened now that they view Muslims as the greater threat), both enjoy a good conspiracy theory and revel in grievance narratives and victim politics, oh, and both spawn a reactionary, illiberal, intolerant ideology. The BNP want a return to a pristine white homeland and the Islamists want shariah law and a pan-Islamic theocracy, or, as it’s better known — a caliphate. The BNP snarl at multiculturalism and blame it for white alienation and exclusion. The Islamists divide the world into two spheres: Muslims, and ‘the rest’.

The British Government has failed woefully at curbing Islamist radicalisation. Muslim alienation, especially amongst the youth is on the rise in the UK. A recent paper by the UK think tank, Policy Exchange, highlighted the growing divide. Of all the categories, the 16-24 year-old Muslims were the most estranged from mainstream Britain, especially compared with their parents’ generation. Thirty eight per cent of them felt they have more in common with Muslims than with non-Muslims. Thirty five per cent would prefer to send their child to an Islamic school, 37 per cent would prefer shariah law and 13 per cent “admired organisations like Al Qaeda”. This is worrying for Britain’s liberal democracy.

Even more worryingly, a new generation is being radicalised, often with the very government funds that are supposed to be countering radicalisation. The British Government’s counter-terrorism strategy is called Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE). In the past three years, 90 million pounds have been spent on PVE. However, by focusing on ‘violent extremism’, as opposed to all extremism, the government has allowed itself to hop into bed with organisations and groups deeply opposed to liberal, democratic values. These groups have ties with the Muslim brotherhood, and our very own Jaamat-e-Islami. Perhaps by joining hands with non-violent extremist groups, the government hopes to provide a defence, a pressure valve if you like, against violent extremism among the angry Muslim youth. But by collaborating with these groups, the government is effectively supporting and funding the Islamist ideology that spawns an illiberal, intolerant and anti-western view.

In any liberal democracy, there are constant tensions. How can one protect the rights of the few from the tyranny of the majority? How il-liberal should the state become in order to protect the liberal values it professes to uphold? These questions always need debate and vigilance. The BBC is right to invite the BNP leader on ‘Question Time’. However abhorrent and racist his views, the electorate has given him a mandate. If the Jaamat-e-Islami were to obtain a similar mandate, they too should be invited on the show. However, allowing freedom of speech is one thing — actively funding and supporting that speech is quite another. The British government must stop all public money to Islamist groups whose views are in conflict with liberal democracy — however non-violent or representative of the community they purport to be. If a liberal, democratic government continues to fund these groups it will become the political equivalent of turkeys voting for Christmas. Or should that be goats for Eid.

Manmohan readies Forces to prepare for a new RAW terror drama

October 22, 2009 Leave a comment

From Our Correspondent

New Delhi—Preparing his Armed Forces to be ready to react to the terror drama that Indian Intelligence Agency, Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) is preparing to execute before November 24,2009, when Indian Premier Manmohan Singh would be leaving for high profile US Visit, the Indian Prime minister on Tuesday gave a call to his Services Chiefs to be ready for another Mumbai like terror attack. Manmohan said on Tuesday that the regular Intelligence reports had warned of “imminent attacks” in the country and security forces needed to be prepared to meet any challenge.

Addressing the top commanders of three Services in New Delhi, he also said that the situation in India’s immediate neighbourhood had worsened, apparently referring to the developments in Pakistan which he did not spell out.

He referred to last year’s Mumbai attacks and the terror strike at the Indian Embassy in Kabul earlier this month, which he said was “yet another grim reminder of the forces” that India is pitted against. “There are both state and non-state actors involved in the business of terrorism. India is a democracy and an open society and is, therefore, sometimes highly vulnerable,” Singh said.

It may be mentioned here that the way the Indian government has so very confidently predicting another 26/11 like terror episode, the world media and global intelligence officials are more than convinced that this time the plot of such an episode has once again been designed by Indian intelligence agency RAW and it is more likely to be executed before Indian Premier’s scheduled official trip to United States, starting from 24th of next month so that he could generate added US support for India and pressure for neighbouring Pakistan.

Israelis to boycott Turkish resorts and coffee

by: Daily.Pk

As most of ‘political aware’ persons know – Zionist regime is well-known for its self-denial – even if the truth about its Zionazi policies comes from respected Jewish individulas, such as South African Jewish judge, Goldstone.

In response to Ankara’s non-stop rubbing of Zionist noses (read it as ‘anti-Semitism’) – Israel’s national airline EIAI has decided to stop subsiding its employees visiting Turkey during the Passover holidays – during which over 80,000 Israeli Jews visit Turkey and spread their immoral culture.

Israel’s major coffee shop chain, IIan, too has decided to join the boycott, according to its director of marketing, Michael Steg, saying: “We have for the time being to stop selling ‘Istambul Coffee’ – our Turkish coffee blend, and we shall keep doing it until matters improve – the airing of Turkish TV drama Ayrilik (Farewell) showing Israeli soldiers as child-killers during Israel’s ‘Operation Cast Lead’ against 1.5 million Palestinians trapped inside Gaza Strip.

Ankara’s recent actions against its old ally – which Zionist-controlled media keeps ignoring – has nothing to do with the so-called ‘anti-Semitism’. It’s as Professor Ephraim Inbar (Bar-IIan University) put it: “Someone has decided to teach Israel a lesson”. Recently, Tel Aviv turned down Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s request to visit Gaza strip and meet Hamas government leaders to negotiate a sort of fair deal between Israeli government and Hamas. Earlier, the reason why the Turkish PM Erdogan blasted Israeli president Shimon Peres at Davos conference – was that Israeli PM Ehud Olmert met Erdogan in Istanbul a few days before Israeli attack on Gaza in December 2008 – and “betrayed” Erdogan, who was conveying messages on phone between Olmer and Damascus (Turkey, then, was playing the part of a negotiator on Israeli request). Israel also infuriated Turkish generals by delaying the delivery of the pre-paid Heron unmanned aviation vehicles (UAV) – and 2008 failed coup against Erdogan government.

“Things have changed. In Davutoglu’s idealogical framework, Israel soesn’t play a central role,” – Ofra Bengio, an expert on Turkey at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University.

According to Israeli daily Ha’aretz, Turkey is the most popular foreign destination for Israel tourists representing 13% of all departures and generating US$300 million in annual revenue. More than 500,000 Israeli Jews visit Turkey each year for beaches and cheap shopping. Yossi Fattal, head of Israel Tourist and Travel Agent Association, said that travellers’ boycott is unprecedented in Israel (since Peres’ outbusrt against Erdogan at Davos). He believes, however, that the impact will not be as severe as it appears now. “Israeli memory isn’t very long – half a year is like an ice age and the memory will fade.”

Now, how much impact the Israeli (population 7 million) boycott would have on Turkey (70 million) – would be interesting to watch. Turkey is home to over 26,000 Jews (second largest Jewish community in a Muslim-majority country – after Islamic Iran). Turkish Jews are (96% Sephardic, and the rest Ashkenazi and Kurds. However, they have carried immense power in the secular Turkey since WW I – as Christopher Jon Bjerknes wrote:

“Long before the ‘cultural revolution’ of communist china, and starting before the Bolshevik Jews of Russia destroyed Christianity and Christians in the Slavik World, the Doenmeh (the secret Jews of Turkey) and especially Mustafa Kemal (Attaturk), tried very hard to strip Turkey of its religion and its culture. It’s vital to World Jewry to prevent the Muslims of Turkey from taking back their nation and their faith and aligning themselves with their Muslim neighbours.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Monday lodged a protest with visiting US Centcom Chief Gen David Petraeus over removing scores of security checkposts on Afghanistan side of Pak-Afghan border fearing it could encourage terrorists’ penetration into Pakistan.
Well-placed sources told TheNation that Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani expressed these views during his meeting with Gen David Petraeus at the GHQ.

According to the sources, host of issues came under discussion including war against terror, security situation on Pak-Afghan border, military operation in South Waziristan and other bilateral matters.  Gen Kayani expressed his deepest concerns with US Central Command Chief General David Petraeus over abolishing scores of checkposts on Afghan side of the Pak-Afghan border and sought his immediate intervention.
The Centcom Chief, sources said assured Gen Kayani that he would take up the matter with ISAF and NATO commanders in Afghanistan.
However, Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira and DG ISPR Major General Athar Abbas on Monday denied that any checkposts on Afghan side of Pak-Afghan border were removed. “There is no such information”, they said while answering volley of questions.
DG ISPR also ruled the possibility of infiltration into Pakistani territory. “Our security forces have surrounded Waziristan Agency. Moreover our troops are present on Pak-Afghan border to check border crossings”, DG ISPR added.  Gen Kayani, informed sources said, also underscored the need for sharing of real time intelligence between Pakistan and US-led forces about movement of insurgents across the Pak-Afghan border.
Gen Petraeus commending the role of Pakistan and its armed forces in war against terror maintained that these sacrifices would never be forgotten.
In another development, Gen Kayani expressed his reservations with Senator John Kerry over attached strings to Pakistan’s national security in the Kerry-Lugar Act, saying Pakistan Army was not opposed to US aid but to the conditions related to country’s national security.
Gen Kayani made these observations while talking to Senator Kerry who called on him at GHQ, informed sources said.
According to the sources US Senator who also discussed scores of other issues, assured Gen Kayani that Kerry-Lugar Act was for the support of Pakistan and would greatly help in enhancing capabilities of security forces of Pakistan.

Israel Spearheading deadly US, India Troika

October 20, 2009 1 comment

By: PKKH

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Friday that a controversial television drama which shows actors dressed as Israeli soldiers killing Palestinian children will not be taken off air. This is the latest, in line of cracks that have appeared in the Israeli-Turkish relationship. Recently the Turkish government has developed a serious mistrust and suspicion of Israel and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Earlier in January this year the Turkish Prime Minister walked out of World Economic Forum after a heated debate with Shimon Peres. This was not a random moment but a well calculated political move on Turkey’s part. On returning home from the Forum, Turkish Prime Minister was greeted with millions of people on streets celebrating outburst of Turkish anger against Israel. During the Israeli massacre of Gaza, most animated protests against Israel took place in Turkey.

Israel has been playing a nefarious double game with Turkey. This is directly posing a serious threat to Turkish national Interest. Turkish nation maybe split in two distinct groups of practicing Muslims and secular Muslims but when it comes to national interests’ Turkish nation is united like ‘Wall of China’. After the US invasion of Iraq, Israel started meddling into Kurdish Iraq. Israel wants to control the Oil of Kurdish Iraq, and eventually use the political conditions to create an independent country of Kurdistan. This will include part of land that is currently part of Turkey. Turkish Army and Air Force has carried out many operations against Kurdish Rebels during the last three years. Turkey is improving its relationship with Syria, and Russia. This is something that is neither in favor of the US nor Israel. Most recent event that further soured Turk-Israeli relationship was the cancellation of a military exercise between the two nations. Turkey is also not on board with Israel’s plan to attack Iran using Turkish airspace. Just like in 2003, Turkey refused to allow US Air force to launch operations into Iraq using Turkish bases.

Israel’s Mossad is also blamed for serious of terrorist attacks that have taken place in Turkey during the last three years. This is not surprising, since Mossad was also behind a failed coup attempt to remove the Turkish government; this was organized through a group called, Ergenekon. (More on this here: www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=77062&sectionid=351020204)

In conclusion Israel has been secretly plotting against Turkey’s national interest. The US knows about the workings of Mossad in Turkey but the US simply doesn’t have the power to check Mossad or Israel. Israel’s dirty plans are not limited to Turkey but they spread all the way to Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s Afghanistan and Pakistan that is the main breeding ground for CIA, Mossad and RAW guinea pigs testing their noses in foreign territories. Through Afghanistan these agencies are involved in destabilizing Pakistan, Iran and China as well.

Israel and India has military partnership that includes hardcore intelligence sharing as well. India has launched two satellites build by Israel those are being used to monitor Pakistan and its Army. Its open secret now that India turned to IDF help to save itself from humiliating defeat in Kargil. The Israeli Air Force has trained Indian pilots to counter PAF F-16s; Israel is working hard on India’s failed Arjun tank project. Mossad told RAW to create false mujahedeen groups in Kashmir and commit acts of terror to malign the image of true mujahedeen’s. List of Israel-India partnership is long one but these are just some of the highlights.

The US, Israel and India now form a deadly nexus against Muslim interests. Currently the main target of this nexus is Pakistan. They want a secular, de-nuclearized, timid, and fragmented Pakistan. Unfortunately for the troika, the Pakistani nation which was asleep for sixty years is finally waking up from its slumber. There are still many traitors and troika boot lickers in our midst, but sooner or later they will be wiped away like tiny particles of sand in front of a rising tide. Pakistani nation is awakening and reshaping its political and intellectual thoughts. The US, Israeli, India nexus will not progress further in Pakistan. Pakistan is the last fortress of Islam and its here where this deadly nexus will be defeated.

PKKH has learned from certain credible sources that recently Israel had requested airspace from Turkey to attack possible Iranian Nuclear Arsenal. However, Turkey strongly refused to allow any such act of aggression by Israel. At the moment, Turkish Air Force is on standby to thwart any adventurous attempts by the Israeli Air force. It can therefore be assumed that false flag attacks might be launched by the trio’s intelligence coalition in any country across the world and be blamed either on Iran or Pakistan to gather the rest of the world’s support to launch attacks on either of these two Muslim countries. Iran must remain on high alert. Pakistan on the other hand needs to continue absolutely high level of vigilance, especially on diplomatic level.

US Betrayal As Pakistan Army Launches Waziristan Offensive

PKKH BREAKING NEWS EXCLUSIVE
PakistanKaKhudaHafiz.com

US and NATO forces have deserted the Paktika province bordering South Waziristan as Pakistan Army launched a military offensive on Saturday.

Highly credible sources have informed BrassTacks that as Pakistan prepared to launch a full-scale offensive in the last few days, the US and NATO queitly pulled out of Afghanistan’s Paktika province that lies on the Afghan side of South Waziristan.

Pakistan had mobilized its armed forces to surround and control exit and entry points for South Waziristan ever since the governor of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province announced a ground offensive in South Waziristan on 15 June. Following the brazen attacks on Pakistan’s security forces in the last week that included an attack at Pakistan Army’s headquarters, the armed forces decided to launch a full scale military offensive in the early hours of Saturday, pounding targets using fighter jets and helicopter gunships in an effort to nuetralize the threat from militant bases high up on the mountains. The military has succeeded in taking control of the heights and put up outposts.

The terrain in South Waziristan is said to be easier to fight on compared to the Swat valley which is more densely forested.

With troops and artillery advancing towards Mehsud tribe stronghold Makeen from Ramzak in the North, Shakai in the South and Jandola in the East, the only escape route for militants in South Waziristan is towards Afghanistan’s Paktika province in the West, which had seen a rise in numbers of US and NATO soldiers in the last few months. With the surge in numbers of US and NATO troops in Afghan provinces bordering Pakistan, fears were raised that it will push militants into Pakistan as Americans set up outposts and bases in the region.

Click Picture To Enlarge

With the start of Operation ‘Rah-e-Nijaat’ looming, the decision from the US and NATO forces to vacate this key region allowing militants to escape or seek reinforcements from the Aghan side of the border is nothing short of a betrayal of epic proportions. The US drones which have struck with impunity in the past could have been effectively used to help Pakistan Army’s offensive in South Waziristan – however they also seem to have come to a halt as the offensive started.

The army’s plan to hold the roads as well as main towns including the Mehsud-dominated centres of Ladha, Makeen and Sararogha will be made more difficult due to this American betrayal as militants can now easily disappear into Afghanistan as well as seek reinforcements. Pakistan has presented evidence to the US and Afghanistan in the past of Indian involvement in supporting the TTP militants with funds and weapons through the Paktika province as well as the Indian consultats in Jalalabad and Kandahar.

Leading Pakistani defence analyst Zaid Hamid of BrassTacks informed PKKHthat in order to ensure the destruction of militancy in South Waziristan, Pakistan Army must now ensure they cut off the militants’ supply and escape route into Afghanistan by securing the border between Paktika and South Waziristan. At the same time Pakistan must target known militant hideouts and bases inside Afghanistan.

Since US and NATO have been striking targets in Pakistan alleging them to be militant / Al-Qaeda hideouts, Pakistan must also safeguard its national security interests and strike targets inside Afghanistan in order for the operation in South Waziristan to succeed.

A new United States report has revealed India’s expanding involvement in Afghanistan, and said New Delhi’s goal is to deny Pakistan “strategic depth” in the war-torn country.

The report by Congressional Research Service (CRS), which works exclusively for the US Congress, said India is the fifth largest single country donor to Afghan reconstruction, funding projects worth about $1.2 billion.

CRS provides policy and legal analysis to committees and members of both the House and Senate, regardless of party affiliation.

However, the report, citing US observers, said, “India’s role in Afghanistan is constructive, and some would support an Indian decision to deploy more security forces in Afghanistan to protect its construction workers, diplomats, and installations. “India reportedly decided in August 2008 to improve security for its officials and workers in Afghanistan, but not to send actual troops there.”

It pointed out that India supported the US-backed Northern Alliance against the Taliban in the mid-1990s. “Tajikistan allows India to use one of its airbases; Tajikistan supports the mostly Tajik Northern Alliance, the report said.

“Many of the families of Afghan leaders have lived in India at one time or another and, as noted above, (President Hamid) Karzai studied there. India saw the Taliban’s hosting of Al-Qaeda as a major threat to India itself because of Al-Qaeda’s association with radical organisations in Pakistan dedicated to ending Indian control of parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Some of these groups have committed major acts of terrorism in India, and there might be connections to the militants who carried out the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008″.

Pakistan says India is using its enlarged presence to promoter insurgency in Balochistan.

But the report said, “Indian officials assert that all their projects are focused on civilian, not military, development and are in line with the development priorities set by the Afghan government. India, along with the Asian Development Bank, financed a $300 million project … to bring electricity from Central Asia to Afghanistan. It has also renovated the well-known Habibia High School in Kabul and committed to a $25 million renovation of Darulaman Palace as the permanent house for Afghanistan’s parliament.

WASHINGTON, July 30: India and Afghanistan are stirring troubles in Fata and Balochistan, Rehman Malik, adviser to the prime minister on interior, told journalists on Wednesday.

Mr Malik also blamed India for indulging in “baseless propaganda” against Pakistan although Pakistan itself was a victim of terrorism.

“The time has come for us to reveal the facts and tell the world how outside forces are creating troubles in Pakistan.”

When pressed to identify the outside forces, he named India, Afghanistan’s Northern Alliance, Chechens and Uzbeks who he said were using Pakistan to serve their vested interests.

“India,” he said, “wants to destabilise Fata. What India and (Afghan President) Mr Karzai are doing must stop. They must stop this. They must stop this.”

He also appealed to Pakistan’s western allies, including the United States, to stop India and Afghanistan.

Although Pakistan has always blamed foreign hands for stirring troubles in Balochistan and the NWFP, this is the first time since the Feb 18 election that a senior government official has directly blamed India.

Mr Malik said that India and Afghanistan had direct links to people like Barhamdagh Bugti and “one call from outside leads to the death of four people in Balochistan”.

Hillary praises Pakistan’s anti-terror commitment

October 20, 2009 Leave a comment

By: Daily.Pk

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday praised Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating terrorism from its soil.

“From what I read in the paper, they’re very much focused on also going into the heartland of where the Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaeda are located and where these plots and these attacks are planned and directed,” she told CNN in an interview.

Asked if the Pakistani government would be able to assert its control over the country in the face of a wave of deadly terrorist attacks, the US secretary of state said, “So I think they understand that there is a direct threat to them, which they are addressing, which I think is all… good.”

Citing Pakistan’s successful anti-Taliban campaign in the Swat valley and Malakand division, she lauded the impressive resolve of the security forces of the country.

“Well, I’m very impressed with the commitment that the Pakistani government – both the civilian leadership and the military – have made…. There is now (a firm anti-terror commitment). And I think the military in Pakistan has proven its effectiveness in going into Swat,” she said.

China, Pakistan Discuss Military Financing

By: Daily.Pk

Pakistan has proposed the creation of a financing firm to help build more joint defense ventures that focus on Chinese investment in Pakistan.

A Pakistan-China Holding Co. is needed to increase defense cooperation, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani told media after meeting with the heads of major Chinese defense firms.

The meeting included China’s missile technology firm Poly Technologies as well as Aviation Industries Corp. of China, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp., China Electronics Technology Group and China North Industry Corp.

Gilani, on his first visit to China as prime minister, said the Chinese government wanted to make Pakistan self-reliant in defense, the report by the government-run APP noted. Discussions included cooperation in production of JF-17 Thunder fighter, Al-Khalid tank, F-22 frigates and airborne warning and control systems.

The design of the Pakistani-made Al-Khalid tank is based on the Chinese Type 90-II that combines technologies from several Soviet-era and Western tanks and is basically a descendant of the widely produced Soviet T-54. The Al-Khalid is designed to use a variety of foreign engines and transmissions to make manufacture and vehicle supply versatile.

The JF-17 Thunder, known in China as the Chengdu FC-1 Xiaolong, is a light-weight multirole combat aircraft jointly developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corp. of China and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Its maiden test flight was in China in 2003 and the first two small-batch production aircraft were delivered to the Pakistan Air Force in March 2007. Pakistani production is to begin later this year.

The proposal for a holding company was brought up with the president of the China International Capital Corp., the APP report said, although it is not clear who raised the subject and how much detail was touched upon.

Gilani also said that China wants greater cooperation for building the capacity of Pakistan’s security forces that have rendered enormous sacrifices while combating terrorism. “We are fighting this war not only for our security but for world peace,” said Gilani.

Chen Qiufa, administrator of China’s State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, said that China fully supported Pakistan’s efforts in the war against terror. China would provide equipment and related assistance to enable

Pakistan’s security forces to combat terrorism effectively.

In a later meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told the Gilani that China understood and supported the Pakistani government’s security strategies.

China was willing to boost cooperation in finance, hydro-electricity, education, culture, railway, road transport and the fishing industry. For his part, Gilani reiterated that Pakistan supports China on issues relating to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang

Israeli war on Gaza killed peace perspective in ME’

Turkey tells Israel to end Gaza tragedy Children in Gaza have no schools to go to: Turk FM

By: The News International

ANKARA: Turkey urged Israel on Friday to end the “humanitarian tragedy” in Gaza, saying ties between the two allies cannot recover if Palestinian suffering continues and peace talks remain dead in the Middle East.

“Ending the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, reviving peace efforts — both on the Palestinian and Syrian track, and most importantly — reinstating a prevailing spirit of peace in the region… this is what we want,” Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters.

“When there is a return to the track of peace, these relations of trust (with Israel) will be re-established on the same level as before,” he said.

Israel’s ties with its chief regional ally took a sharp downturn last week when Ankara excluded the Jewish state from annual joint military exercises, prompting a rebuke from the United States.

The row flared Thursday as Israel summoned the Turkish envoy to protest a Turkish state television series which it condemned as “inciting hatred against Israel” and “not worthy of being broadcast even in an enemy state.”

Davutoglu said that Israel’s war on Gaza at the turn of the year “killed the peace perspective” in the Middle East and that ongoing turmoil in the devastated Palestinian enclave was at the core of the bilateral chill.

He made it clear Ankara was still bitter that the war also disrupted indirect peace talks between Israel and Syria that Turkey had mediated “with so much effort.”

“As long as the human tragedy in Gaza continues, no one should expect us to be part of a military picture” with Israel, he said, referring to the scrapped military drills.

“Although no single rocket has been fired on Israel from Gaza over the past eight months, children in Gaza have no schools to go to, people have no homes to take shelter in,” he said.

Davutoglu rejected suggestions that his government, the moderate offshoot of a now-banned Islamist party, was becoming anti-Israeli.

“The humanitarian situation (in Gaza) should be improved in the shortest possible time.

How can wanting this amount to being anti-Israeli? This is a humanitarian attitude,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the television series that infuriated Israel had no political motive but conceded the plot might be “a bit exaggerated,” Anatolia news agency reported.

“Relations between Turkey and Israel have always been strong. We have full confidence that they will always remain strong,” he said.

The first episode, aired Tuesday, showed Israeli forces shooting a little girl and a newborn baby, and portrayed them as insulting and ridiculing Palestinians. Israel’s hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday the latest developments “raised the question: what direction is Turkish policy taking? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been at the forefront of international criticism of the Gaza offensive.

In an unprecedented outburst, he stormed out from a debate at the World Economic Forum in January, accusing Israel of “barbarian” acts and telling Israeli President Shimon Peres, sitting next to him, that “you know well how to kill people.”

In contrast to its souring ties with Israel, Erdogan’s government has markedly improved ties with Syria and sought closer relations with Iran, an arch-enemy of the Jewish state.
