SC: No proof against Hafiz Saeed in 26/11 case

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday backed the release of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed who India accuses of masterminding the 2008 attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai, dismissing government appeals against his release.

Pakistan’s central government and Punjab government had challenged the release of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, founder of Lashka-e-Taiba militant group, by a high court last year.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh had conveyed his “deep concern” about Hafiz Saeed to his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on April 29 in Thimphu.

“PM (Manmohan Singh) mentioned deep concern about Hafiz Saeed and the way he is allowed to roam free and engage in communication not conducive (to the relationship between India and Pakistan),” Indian foreign secretary Nirupama Rao said.
